Alkaline water can be bought in food stores offline or online. But it might not be very cost-efficient in the long-run. (And maybe it doesn’t worth the hype at all? I’ve tried to figure it out).

Imagine buying this pack (even though it’s great!), every second day, to meet the daily needs of drinking water for a family of two. That’s a lot of money.

So that’s when alkaline water filters come in as convenient.

I’ve tried to cut your time on the research, so I hope you’ll find this report handy.

Core water pH

pH is a scale from 1 to 14. It measures liquid’s acidity or alkalinity. pH below 7 is considered an acid, and anything with a pH above 7 is an alkali, or base.

Pure water pH is 7. So, water with a pH lower than 7 is called acidic, and greater than 7 – basic. This text is a property of Ipoki.com. The “healthy” range for pH in our surface water systems has to be 6.5 to 8.5, and between 6 and 8.5 for the groundwater systems.

And just to paint a clear picture of why it does matter… If we are talking about natural sources of water, like ponds and rivers, at 4.9 to 4.0 pH level fish reproduction system is affected and at 3.0 – adult fish die.

Yes, humans are not fish, of course, but if something kills fish, it can’t be particularly good for us.

Still, tap water in the U.S. tends to fall below the levels considered normal – it’s in the 4.3 to 5.3 range – depending on where you are based.

What does acidic water do to your body?

The pH of water can make some minerals more or less available to the body. So heavy metals in acidic water appear to be more harmful because they are more readily available to the body.

High pH should make heavy metals less available and thus less toxic. Low pH water can corrode metal pipes and draw metal ions into the water, rendering it dangerous to drink or use at home.

Research shows that consumption of acidic drinks, such as soft drinks and sports drinks, is connected with the number of cases of dental erosion.

Most soft drinks are very acidic, with pH levels ranging from 2 to 4. When you put your teeth in contact with such acid liquids they are prone to demineralization.

Acidosis is a disease of increased concentration of hydrogen ion in blood and body tissue. It occurs when the pH of the artery falls below 5.55.

Harmful effects of acidosis may include increased bone resorption and reduced osteoblast function. And that’s just a couple of names.

How to make alkaline water?

Of course, even without filters, you can make your own alkaline water.

You can use lemon juice, for example. Lemon is acidic in nature, but has a pH level below 7. When applied to water, ingested and completely metabolized, its role is alkalizing and raises the pH level in the body above 7, which is alkaline.

That’s mostly why we’re told to kick off our mornings with a glass of lemon water.

Adding a half of a tablespoon of baking soda to a gallon of water is another way to make it more alkaline.

But if you want your drinks not only to be alkaline but also properly cleaned and remineralized, then you’d better opt for a decent alkaline water filter.

It will save you loads of money in the long run and hopefully make a better impact on your health.

Pros and cons of alkaline water

Pros

  • A few studies suggesting alkaline water can improve the health of people with certain medical conditions, such as acid reflux, high blood pressure, diabetes, and high cholesterol.
  • Ultimately, alkaline water is the best option for all of them, because it decreases the workload of the gastric system and not because it will alkalize the body. This text is a property of Ipoki.com The human body is already in alkaline condition at a pH of 7.35–7.45.
  • Some small changes in pH will make it difficult for your body to control other organ systems. And may even encourage bacteria to grow within your G.I. tract.

Cons

  • Although alkaline drinking water is supposed to be safe, it may produce adverse side effects too.
  • Some examples of those include reducing healthy stomach acidity, which helps kill bacteria and prevent any harmful contaminants from reaching your bloodstream.
  • Also, overall excess alkalinity in the body can cause gastrointestinal problems and irritation of the skin.

To keep it short, for the sake of your health, it makes sense to increase the pH factor of tap water. (Especially if it drops below the norm of 6.5 to 8.5, which you can always measure using a simple pH tester like this one.)
