Honeywell Thermostat Reset (1000, 2000, 4000 and More)

Want to know a fun fact? Honeywell International is the fourth-largest conglomerate globally and the second-largest in the United States. They make all sorts of products, serving the engineering, automotive, and aerospace sectors, with the latter being their cash cow. In 2020, they brought in over $30 billion in sales, which is the kind of revenue you can only expect from a conglomerate.

Being a conglomerate, they make all sorts of things, many of which do not fall into their broadest categories. For instance, they make all kinds of home appliances, including thermostats.

A thermostat is one of the most integral elements of your home for your comfort. Without a good one, you’ll find yourself either too cold or too hot at the wrong times. Honeywell makes excellent thermostats, and if you’re reading this, chances are that you have one, and you agree.

Does Honeywell thermostat have a reset button?

There is no specific physical thermostat reset button on the newer Honeywell thermostat. This doesn’t mean that it doesn’t have reset functionality, though. The setting is in the software, which you have to access by navigating through the menu in a specific way. It differs between the different Honeywell thermostat models, though, so you’ll need to know how it goes for your model in particular.

Older models like the 4000 series have a physical button that can be pressed with a slender object.

What is the recovery mode on Honeywell thermostat?

Have you ever walked in on your Honeywell thermostat sitting in Recovery Mode? If you have a smart thermostat of any kind, this is something that you might be familiar with, but you might not know exactly what it’s all about.

Recovery Mode on your thermostat means that it is currently waking itself up or recovering from a power-saving state that it might have been in previously. For instance, if you set a schedule for it to turn off, you’ll see it in Recovery Mode before the scheduled time comes around. This gives it time to ‘warm up’ in a sense, so it can hit the optimal temperature when it should.

Resetting a Honeywell Thermostat

When you set out looking for how to do a Honeywell thermostat reset, exactly what you’re looking for is how to factory reset it! They are actually the exact same thing. However, the process to achieve this differs between the different models of Honeywell thermostats out there.

Remember that a factory reset will restore your device to the settings it had when it came out of the box brand new. You’ll have to set it up afresh, but it’s a great way to eliminate any glitches or bugs that might be messing with the software and keep it acting brand new.

Here’s how to reset the thermostat on pretty much every Honeywell model that’s out there.

Honeywell 1000 and 2000 Series Thermostats

Looking for how to program Honeywell thermostat like this one? The truth is, you can’t. It wasn’t built to be programmed, and it is quite basic. This doesn’t mean that you can’t factory reset it, though.

1. Switch off the thermostat.

2. Turn off the power to the thermostat by shutting off its circuit breaker.

3. Remove the faceplate.

4. Remove the batteries. Reinsert them flipped the wrong way.

5. Wait for five seconds and then take the batteries out.

6. Put them back in, this time aligned the correct way.

7. Put the thermostat back on its mounting plate.

8. Turn the circuit breaker on again.

It’s a lot of steps compared to more modern thermostats, but this is how to factory reset a 1000 or 2000 series Honeywell thermostat reset.

How to reset the Honeywell 4000 Series Thermostats?

The 4000 series are relatively barebones, but they are actually programmable, making resetting them easier. This is one of the only models with a physical button to reset it.

With the thermostat switched on, hold down the Program button and use a paper clip or similar small object to press the thermostat Reset button at the right side of the device. After doing this, release the Program selection button after a second.

Honeywell 6000 thermostat reset

To factory reset a 6000 series thermostat from Honeywell, you can do it straight from the display, using a specific Honeywell thermostat reset code. You don’t need to worry about searching far and wide for it. I’ll tell you everything.

1. Press the up arrow and the fan button simultaneously.

2. Change the left number to 90 and the right one to 1.

3. Press Done.

Just like that, you’ve entered the necessary command to reset the thermostat!

Honeywell 8320WF and 8580WF Thermostats

Setting the 8320WF and 8580WF models to their factory settings involves using a Honeywell thermostat reset code specific to this model. There’s no general code that can be used for any of their thermostats.

1. Press the System button.

2. Hold down on the box in the center of the thermostat.

3. Set the left number to 0710 and the right one to 1.

4. Press Done.

Honeywell 8321WF Thermostats

The Honeywell 8321WF uses a touchscreen alone, with no physical buttons on the front. Despite this, the process to reset it is a bit more complicated, though you shouldn’t have an issue carrying it out.

1. Press Menu.

2. Press Dealer Information.

3. Go to the bottom of this menu and note the date code.

4. Press Done.

5. Go to Installer Options.

6. Enter the date code that you noted.

7. Tap Reset to Defaults.

8. Press Yes to confirm.

How to reset Honeywell 9000 Series Thermostats?

The 9000 series have the more advanced thermostats from Honeywell. Fortunately, if you’re trying to figure out how to reset the thermostat and you have one of these, it’s easy.

1. Tap the Menu button.

2. Select Preferences.

3. Now tap on Restore Factory Defaults.

4. Now press Yes to confirm.

Honeywell T5, T5+, and T6 Thermostats

These Honeywell thermostats are some of the newest from the conglomerate. You know how advanced they are simply by the fact that there’s an included mobile app that gives you a lot of remote control of your house’s temperature.

Performing a full system reset is ridiculously straightforward if you have any of these.

1. Select and hold the Menu option from the screen.

2. Look through the options there until you come across Reset.

3. Now tap on Reset here.

4. Confirm your decision to reset the thermostat by pressing Yes.

Honeywell Lyric Reset

If you have a Honeywell Lyric or Smart thermostat, the reset process is quicker than any other. It might not be super clear compared to others, though.

1. Hold down on the cloud icon on the left side of the device.

2. This will bring up a menu. Scroll downwards through the menu until you come across Reset.

3. Press this to factory reset the Honeywell thermostat.

How to reset a non-programmable Honeywell thermostat?

The non-programmable Honeywell thermostats are the much older models. One advantage of these models is that resetting them tends to be the same process. It all depends on cutting the power to them, which essentially forces them to reset. It’s how you do this that is the real process. Not all of them have a thermostat reset button that you can easily use to reset, after all. In fact, when it comes to having a physical button, the 4000 series is the only one that I know.

To do this, you will need to switch off the thermostat. Once it is off, cut the power to it by switching off the circuit breaker that controls its wiring. Remove the thermostat from the wall and take the batteries out of it. One trick is to reverse the batteries so that each one has its negative end placed where positive should be, and vice versa.

After you have done this:

  1. Wait five or ten seconds.
  2. Once that has elapsed, put the batteries back in, but this time, the right way.
  3. Put the thermostat back on the wall, and restore the circuit breaker.
  4. Turn on the thermostat.

Just like that, you have factory reset a non-programmable thermostat without much stress!
