From their humble and bumpy start dating back to 2014, Ring has grown to become an almost undefeatable foe when it comes to video doorbells. Chances are, if you have a video doorbell, you have a Ring.
Not only do they make life much more convenient thanks to being able to see who’s at the door when you’re in another part of the house or even away from home, but these doorbells also have security perks. This doesn’t just apply to the homeowner, but the whole community! These cameras have been able to help solve crimes and find culprits in neighborhoods, which is quite amazing.
To get these benefits out of your Ring video doorbell though, it needs to be fully charged. While you can connect them to the mains, not everyone does this. If you’re one of those who have opted to recharge it, you probably have many questions, like how long does Ring battery take to charge? Don’t worry! They will all be answered here! Let’s go!

How to recharge Ring battery?
The Ring doorbell battery charging process depends on the generation of the unit in question. All of them can be charged with a Micro-USB cable. Still, only from the Video Doorbell 2 and higher can you simply remove the battery instead of the entire doorbell.
Let’s focus on the process for the newer generations, though, as this is what you are more likely to have. I’ll talk about how to recharge the Ring battery in your first-generation doorbell later on. One cool thing is that the mobile app will send you a notification for when the battery in your device is low, so you’ll only have to charge it when it is absolutely necessary.
Now then, to get your Ring doorbell battery charging, you just need to follow these steps:
- Remove the faceplate on the doorbell to gain access to the Ring battery. To do this, you will need to use the screwdriver that came with the doorbell to remove the special security screw that holds the plate in place from the bottom.
- Remove the faceplate by pulling the bottom edge away from the wall towards yourself.
- You will see the battery protruding from the very bottom of the now-exposed doorbell. Press the silver tab to release the battery and slide it out of the doorbell.
- You’ll notice a Micro-USB port on one end of the battery. You’ll have a compatible USB cable included in the box with your doorbell, though you can use any other one. Plug the right end into the battery.
- Plug the other end into any USB port that will serve as your Ring battery charger, whether it’s on a wall, a computer, or a power brick.
- You will notice an orange and green light turn on on the battery. This indicates that the battery is charging.
- Once the orange light turns off, leaving only the green light, the battery is fully charged.
- Slide it into the doorbell with the silver tab facing downwards to replace the battery. You should hear a click once pushed into place.
- Now put the faceplate back on. Make sure to slot in the top section before pushing the bottom end in place. You’ll also hear a click when doing this.
- Screw the security screw in.
Charging Ring Doorbell 1
How you charge the first-generation doorbells from Ring is quite different from the newer ones, as they did not have removable batteries in them. However, the process is not too complex.
Follow these steps to get started with Ring Doorbell battery charging with the original Video Doorbell:
- Unscrew the security screws that reside on the bottom face of the doorbell. There should be, too, one at each end.
- Slide the doorbell up and towards you to remove it from its mounting bracket.
- There is a Micro-USB port on the back of the doorbell. You can use any cable, though one comes included in the box. Plug the appropriate end into the back of the doorbell.
- Plug the other end into a USB port. A 2.1A charger is recommended to charge your Ring battery fastest. You’ll see a part of the circular Ring on the front flashing to indicate its charging.
- Once the Ring on the front is entirely blue, the device is fully charged. Disconnect it.
- Reattach it to the mounting plate.
- Screw the security screws back in on the bottom of the device.
How long does it take to charge a Ring doorbell?
The amount of time you will need to have your Ring battery charger up and running depends on the specific Ring Video Doorbell model you have. It also depends on the source that the battery is charging from. A computer’s USB port, for instance, will travel slow.
Suppose you own the earlier Ring Video Doorbells, from the first-, second, or third- generation. In that case, the Ring battery charge time comes to anywhere between five hours and ten hours. It can be frustrating having to wait this long, though, so you can either use a 2A Ring battery charger or have a second battery on standby (if using the Ring Doorbell 3 or 4).
For the Ring Doorbell charge time for the fourth generation, it comes to six to eight hours. While it can’t possibly achieve as low as 5 hours this time around, it doesn’t make you wait as long as the older models for a full charge.
Ring Doorbell 3 battery charge time
According to the guys at Ring themselves, your battery should take anywhere between five hours and ten to get fully juiced. Once again, this time depends on the power source you’re using to charge it.
Ring Doorbell 3 plus battery charge time
If you have the Plus version of the third-generation model, your Ring battery charge time is exactly the same as the smaller model, at five to ten hours for a full charge.
