Nest Changes Temperature on Its Own: Why is that?

Nest thermostat is a smart device. Like many smart home devices, it’s designed to constantly learn about your day-to-day schedule & adjust its settings based on your at-home activities. These automatic settings help the smart device save energy & stabilize your home’s temperature throughout the day.

However, many Nest devices change their pre-assigned temperature settings way more often than their users need them to. This is a common problem that many Nest users face. It probably happens because of one of the following reasons:

  • Auto-Schedule Feature: Google’s Nest Learning Thermostat comes with an auto-schedule feature. This feature enables the smart thermostat to change its temperature settings based on the user’s daily schedule. This feature could be the reason why your Nest thermostat settings keep changing on their own.
  • Eco-Mode: Nest thermostats come with a feature called “eco-mode.” This feature turns on automatically whenever the thermostat detects no one’s home. When activated, eco-mode forces the thermostat to stay fixed at specific temperature settings. Turning off eco-mode could help you stop your Nest thermostat from changing its temperature settings.
  • Home & Away Feature: The Nest thermostat can tell when you’re home or away. The automatic temperature changes could be caused by the device erroneously detecting that you’re not at home.
  • Early-On Feature: This feature ensures that your home temperature reaches a specific setting before a scheduled time. For example, the thermostat may turn on your heating/cooling right before 7PM – the time you return home. Turning off this feature can help you prevent the smart device from auto-adjusting it temperature settings.

Can You Lock Temperature on Nest?

Yes. If you want to lock your thermostat to a specific temperature range, you can do that by taking the following steps:

  1. On your thermostat, bring up the main menu
  2. Select “Settings”
  3. Find & select an option called “Lock”
  4. Confirm your decision to lock the thermostat
  5. Enter your thermostat’s PIN twice to confirm the decision
  6. Select which mode you want locked (Heat & Cool, Heat, or Cool)
  7. Select your desired temperature range
  8. Click “Done” to complete this process.

Remember: you’ll need your Thermostat’s PIN code to carry out this process. This locking method works on all three Nest Thermostat models: Nest Thermostat, Nest Thermostat E, & Nest Learning Thermostat. If you can’t remember your thermostat’s PIN, you’ll need to learn how to set a hold temp on Nest using other means.

How to Keep Nest Thermostat at Constant Temperature?

Locking your thermostat isn’t the only way to keep it at a constant temperature setting. Here are some other ways to keep Nest thermostat at a constant temperature:

Strategy #1. Disable Auto-Schedule

Turn off your Nest thermostat’s auto-scheduling feature. You’ll prevent it from straying away from your desired temperature preferences. You can do that in two ways: via the thermostat itself or the Nest app. I’ll teach you both the techniques:

Option A: Disable Auto-Schedule from Nest Thermostat

  • Open the main menu on the thermostat
  • Select Settings
  • Find & select an option called “Nest Sense”
  • Find & select an option titled “Auto-Schedule”
  • Select “Off”

Within 5 seconds, Nest will indicate that it’s “Turning Off Auto-Schedule.”

Option B: Disable Auto-Schedule Via the Nest App

  • In the Nest app, select your thermostat
  • Select Settings
  • Find & select the option titled “Auto-Schedule”
  • Select “Off”

Here’s a video guide that further simplifies this process:

Strategy #2. Disable Eco Mode

Disabling your thermostat’s eco-mode will prevent it from auto-adjusting its temperature settings when you’re at home. Here are two ways to disable your Nest thermostat’s eco-mode:

Option A: Disable Eco-Mode via the Nest Thermostat

  • Open the main menu on your thermostat
  • Select Settings
  • Find & select an option titled “Home/Away Assist”
  • Scroll down this section & find an option titled “Stop Using”
  • Select the “Stop Using” option

Once you’ve taken these steps, set the eco-temperature setting to “off.” To do that, take the following steps:

  • Open the main menu on your thermostat
  • Select Settings
  • Select “Eco”
  • Set “Cool to” to “Off” & Set “Heat to” to “Off” as well (scroll all the way to the highest & lowest settings)

You can take these steps via the Nest app as well.

Option B: Disable Eco Mode via the Nest App

  • In the Nest app, select your Thermostat
  • Select Settings
  • Select Home/Away Assist
  • Select “Off”

Now that your thermostat’s eco-mode is disabled, it won’t change its temperature settings automatically. Here’s Google’s official guide on this process. Read it to learn how to change the temperature ranges on your Nest Thermostat.

Strategy #3. Reset the Schedule

Lastly, you can clear your Nest’s auto-schedule & prevent it from automatically changing its temp settings. Here’s how you can reset your thermostat’s auto-schedule settings:

  • Open the main menu on your thermostat
  • Select Settings
  • Find and select an option titled “Reset”
  • Select the option titled “Auto-Schedule”
  • Select Reset

Confirm your decision. Within ten seconds, your Nest Thermostat’s auto-schedule settings will be updated. Use one of these three strategies to learn how to hold temperature on Nest. Hopefully, after implementing one of these solutions, your Nest will stop automatically changing its temp settings.
