Chromecast specifications

Google introduced the first version in 2013 as a small toggle that you could connect to make non-smart access to the internet. The second generation followed this in 2015 with Chromecast Audio and Chromecast Ultra. Chromecast audio is specifically designed for audio streaming apps like Sonos and Spotify. On the other hand, Chromecast Ultra supports 4k streaming.

How to use Chromecast on a non-smart TV?

Plug the Chromecast device into your TV

Chromecast has an HDMI lead that you have to plug into the HDMI port at your Television’s back. Then, connect it to a power supply or your TV with a USB cable.

Launch Chromecast

Once you plug it in, download the Chromecast app on your mobile phone or tablet from Google Play Store. Ensure both the Chromecast and your phone use a similar Wi-Fi network for this to work.

Download Google home

Turn on your TV, and a prompt will appear asking you to download the Google Home app on your smartphone or tablet.

Connect everything

After loading the app, connect your phone or tablet to Chromecast. Note that the device will connect automatically if you use the second-generation version as long as you have turned your phone’s Bluetooth on. However, you will have to connect via a Wi-Fi connection page on your phone if you are using the first-generation model.

When the connection between Chromecast and your phone is established, it is time to configure. First, launch the Google Home app on your phone to complete the configuration process. Depending on your phone’s type, you may or may not be asked for permission. If not, click on the symbol that looks like a silhouette of a speaker on the right hand of the home screen.

Set up Chromecast

A list of the device will appear once you click on this button. Ensure your phone and TV display a similar identifier before clicking the ‘setup’ button. You will be redirected to a page that says ‘Chromecast found’. This is an indication that the first step is successful. Next, click on ‘Continue’ to process the process. Finally, enter the 4-digit code to connect the two devices and click the ‘I see it’ button.

Watch Netflix on my non-smart TV with Chromecast

Chromecast is a cheap and easy-to-use device that will turn your non-smart TV smart. You will only need to plug it in to access the content from your Android phone, tablet, or laptop on your Television. In addition, download the Chromecast Android or iOS app on your phone or install the compatible software on your computer.

Use the Netflix browser version when casting from your laptop. Also, use Google Chrome as it is the default browser on Chromecast. Furthermore, ensure that your phone, tablet, or laptop and the Chromecast device are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.

Open the Netflix app on your phone, tablet, or laptop and click the ‘Cast’ button.’ Next, select the Chromecast from the list, and Netflix content on your phone will appear on your TV.

Does Chromecast work with a non-smart TV?

Yes, but your non-smart TV should have an HDMI input port to connect Chromecast. However, you will need another device like your phone, tablet, or laptop to control it. Download the Chromecast app to cast content on the TV.

What do you need to start using Chromecast on your non-smart TV?

Once you complete the setup process above, you will only need a remote control to select what you want. Keep in mind that the Chromecast device acts as an intermediary between your phone, tablet, or laptop to your TV.
