Firestick Keeps Restarting: Here’s How to Fix It

Having an Amazon Fire Stick is like having a smart TV that can fit in your pocket. It doesn’t matter whether the TV you’re using supports smart functionality or can connect to the internet. As long as it has an HDMI port in the back, you can slot in your Fire Stick and gain access to many streaming services. It’s hard not to love.

The Fire Stick was launched by Amazon in late 2014 as a more portable form of the Fire TV, which was like a set-top box. Since then, their Fire TV has claimed a huge market share for streaming devices, with an estimated 100 million users each month in 2022. They are second only to Roku.

With so many people who own Fire Sticks, it is no surprise that some will deal with certain software issues. One of the most annoying of these is when your Firestick keeps restarting. This is a software issue, though, and if you know what to do when it happens, you can prevent the Firestick from turning off or restarting.

Here's what we'll cover:

Do Firesticks go bad?

Like pretty much any piece of technology, your Firestick is not immortal. It can go bad the same way anything else can. However, if you take care of it and you’re not a power user, it will probably take several years before it gets to that point.

The mechanical portions are the most likely to wear down, such as the HDMI plug. The power port on the side may have its pins bend flat if it gets unplugged and plugged back in way too frequently.

The electronic components tend to stay good for longer. Still, you are very likely to notice lag creeping in as the device gets older and you’ve used it more.

Why does my Firestick keep restarting?

Now then. If you notice your Firestick keeps rebooting, there’s no need for you to chuck it at a wall just yet. You can try fixes that are very likely to get it working like normal again. I had this exact problem happen with mine, and using these tips helped me out. I’ve also shared them with friends and family with much success!

Worry not. If your Amazon Fire Stick reset itself and keeps doing that, these tips can help you knock some sense into it and fix the problem:

  • Try connecting your Fire Stick with an adapter instead of using the TV’s USB port as a power source. In some cases, the USB port cannot provide the right amount of power to your streaming device. If this is the case, you might notice that your Firestick keeps turning off or rebooting. All Amazon Firesticks come with a power adapter straight out of the box, perfectly rated to power the device as intended. If you’ve lost yours, you can get a new OEM one from here.
  • Disconnect your Firestick from the TV and from power. Once you’ve done this, leave it out for about a minute, and then plug it back in. By doing this, you’re hard resetting it in a sense. You can then plug it back in, and if the cause of this was a software issue, you’d find that that restart helped clear the problem.
  • When a Firestick keeps restarting, make sure that it is plugged directly into the HDMI port on the TV and not through an extension box. This extension box may be the source of the problem you’re facing, as the signal needs to go through a longer route before it gets to the TV.
  • Ensure that your power cable is in good condition. An Amazon Firestick that you have had for a long time might keep turning off because the power cable is worn out, and slight movements cause it to disconnect briefly. This would seem like your Firestick keeps rebooting, but it is actually losing power due to a faulty connection.

Firestick reboot loop fix?

The reboot loop issue that some users face tends to come after they’ve had their Firestick for a long time, and it might seem like it has reached the end of its life. However, quite a few things can push a Firestick into a reboot loop. If you know the causes, it makes it easier to understand the ways to fix them.

  • Is your Firestick close to a heat source like a radiator or a game console? If it is, the reason why your Firestick keeps rebooting could be as a result of overheating. Try to move any hot objects away from it to allow it to stay cool.
  • Did you restart Firestick after installing a new app and then notice that it keeps looping? If you can get into the UI before it restarts again, try to uninstall the latest installed app. A bug might be responsible.
  • A severe hardware problem can cause a boot loop. In these cases, there’s not much you can personally do. If still under warranty, I recommend sending it in to get checked or replaced.

How to restart Firestick?

When you reboot Firestick the right way, instead of yanking it in and out every time you need to turn it off or restart it, it will likely last longer. When you cut off its power so suddenly, it can lead to corruption of the software. That can cause the above problems or cause a Fire Stick crashing issue.

Here are the steps to restart your Fire Stick properly:

  1. With your TV switched on and the Fire Stick booted up and on the home screen, hold down the Home button on the remote control for a few seconds. Alternatively, you can navigate to the Home tab on the screen.
  2. At the right side of the screen, select “Settings.”
  3. Now, scroll down and select “My Fire TV.”
  4. Finally, scroll down this last menu. Select “Restart.”

This is the proper way to restart your Fire TV. You will also see a “Sleep” option in this same menu, which you can use when you’re done with it in the meantime. These options can help prevent software issues like boot loops and constant crashing.
